How to Calculate Your Loan Payment (EMI)

Whether you're taking out a home loan, auto loan, or personal loan, this calculator shows your fixed monthly payment (EMI, or Equated Monthly Installment) along with the total interest you'll pay over the life of the loan, using the standard amortizing-loan formula banks use.

Steps

  1. Enter the loan amount you're borrowing.
  2. Enter the annual interest rate offered by the lender.
  3. Enter the loan term in years.
  4. Click "Calculate EMI" to see your monthly payment and total cost.

Worked example: A $200,000 loan at 8.5% annual interest over 20 years (240 months): monthly rate = 8.5% ÷ 12 = 0.7083%. Applying the EMI formula gives a monthly payment of roughly $1,736, a total repayment of about $416,600, and total interest of around $216,600 — more than the original loan amount, which is typical for a 20-year term.

Understanding the Numbers

The monthly payment stays fixed for the life of a standard amortizing loan, but the mix changes over time — early payments are mostly interest, while later payments are mostly principal. The "Total Interest" figure shown is the full cost of borrowing on top of what you originally took out, which is often larger than people expect on long-term loans.

How Loan Term Affects Total Cost

TermApprox. Monthly PaymentApprox. Total Interest
10 yearsHigher paymentLower total interest
20 yearsModerate paymentModerate total interest
30 yearsLower paymentHighest total interest

A shorter term always increases the monthly payment but reduces the total interest paid, since the balance is paid down faster and accrues interest for less time.

Common Uses

Homebuyers compare monthly payments across different mortgage rates before choosing a lender. Car buyers check whether a loan fits their monthly budget. Anyone considering a personal loan can see the true total cost before signing. Frequently Asked Questions

What is EMI?

EMI stands for Equated Monthly Installment — a fixed payment made every month that covers both principal and interest.

Does this include taxes, insurance, or fees?

No, this calculates principal and interest only. Your actual payment may be higher if your lender bundles in taxes, insurance, or fees.

Is this financial advice?

No, this tool is for estimation purposes only. Consult a licensed financial advisor or your lender for exact terms.

What if the interest rate is 0%?

The calculator will simply divide the loan amount evenly across the number of months.

Why is the total interest so much higher on long loans?

Interest accrues on the remaining balance every month, so the longer the balance takes to pay down, the more total interest accumulates — even though the monthly payment is lower.
